The plaque is shield shaped and pierced right through, worked into scrolls and lobes that leave as much open air as metal, with diamonds set along every band and milgrain worked around each opening. An oval sapphire sits at the centre in a plain collet. Pierced work of this kind is what platinum made possible: no other white metal is strong enough to hold a setting this open.
