Elgin Pocket Watch Value: Date It, Grade It, Price It
What an Elgin pocket watch is worth depends on its case, its grade and its condition. How to read all three, date yours from the movement serial, and what real Elgins have sold for.
Elgin pocket watch value, in brief:
- Everyday Elgin grades in gold filled or plated cases sell for modest sums: US$140.80 for a plated one at Bonhams in May 2026.
- A solid gold case lifts the value: £358 for a 9ct Elgin and £1,408 for a decorated 14K hunter at Bonhams in 2024.
- Rare high grades (Veritas, Father Time, Lord Elgin) can reach thousands, even in gold filled cases.
- Date it from the serial on the movement, not the case: 1 million in 1882, 9 million in 1900, 23 million in 1920.

What decides the value of an Elgin
Elgin made more watches than any other American factory, so the name alone is not rare. Three things decide what yours is worth:
- The case. Solid gold, gold filled, silver or base metal. On most Elgins this is the biggest single factor.
- The grade. A named high grade such as Veritas or Father Time is worth far more than a 7 or 15 jewel everyday movement.
- Condition. A clean enamel dial, a watch that runs, and an original case that fits.
This page covers Elgin only. For pocket watches in general, see our pocket watch value guide; for Elgin's great rival, see Waltham pocket watch value.
Elgin in brief: 1864 to the 1960s

A Chicago company, an Illinois factory
The National Watch Company was incorporated in Chicago in August 1864 and built its factory at Elgin, Illinois. Its first watch, delivered in 1867, was an 18 size, 15 jewel movement wound and set with a key, named the B.W. Raymond after Benjamin W. Raymond, a founder.
Stem winding followed in 1873, and the firm took the name Elgin National Watch Company in 1874.
- 1910: Elgin built its own observatory to keep factory time exact.
- Second World War: civilian work stopped for military watches, chronometers and instruments.
- 1964: the original Elgin factory closed; US manufacturing ended in 1968.
- Late 1950s to mid 1960s: some "Elgin" watches had imported Swiss movements.
Elgins were sold in Britain too, and some wear British hallmarked silver or gold cases (there is an example below), so a hallmarked case does not mean an English movement.

How to date an Elgin from its serial number
Elgin numbered every movement in one running sequence, from 101 in 1867 to about 55 million by 1956. That number dates your watch, but only the one on the movement.
- Open the back
Open the rear lid (on a hunter, the back, not the front cover). Some have an inner dust cover too. If it resists, see how to open a pocket watch.
- Read the movement
The serial is engraved on the top plate of the movement, up to eight digits. From the 1930s some start with a letter standing for the millions.
- Ignore the case number
Numbers inside the lids belong to the case maker. They do not date the movement.
- Look it up
Use the table below for the year, or Pocket Watch Database and Elgintime for grade, size and jewels as well.
Elgin serial numbers by year
Find the largest number below yours: that is roughly when production reached it. Elgin sometimes made plates in advance and finished them later, so read the year as approximate.
We publish only rows where the two standard Elgin lists agree: ccwatchmaker.com and thewatchguy.com. They differ by a year or so between 1867 and 1881, 1921 and 1945, and 1951 and 1952.
A Bonhams lot sold in September 2024 had Elgin movement 17,366,635, made around 1912, in a 9ct gold case hallmarked in Birmingham in 1930. American movements and cases were often made and sold separately, so the case can be years younger.
The grades and jewel counts that matter

Fine finish means a better grade
Everyday Elgins have 7 to 17 jewels; the firm was built on 7 to 15 jewel watches. Better grades have 19, 21 or 23, often in gold settings, with swirling damaskeened plates and a precise regulator.
More jewels usually means a finer watch, but the name of the grade matters more than the count.
| Name on the movement | What it is | What to look for |
|---|---|---|
| B.W. Raymond | Elgin's first watch (1867) and its long running railroad grade, named after a founder | 17, 19 or 21 jewels; open face, lever set |
| Father Time | Railroad grade, 21 jewels in the 1903 catalogue | Some have a 24 hour dial or winding indicator |
| Veritas | A high 18 size grade: 21 or 23 jewels in the 1903 catalogue | Gold jewel settings, fine damaskeening |
| Lord Elgin | Extra thin series launched in May 1908; later the name of Elgin's premium wristwatches | 21 jewel 16 size examples are rare |
| No name, 7 to 17 jewels | The everyday Elgin, made by the million | Value sits mostly in the case |

Railroad grades
After a fatal collision at Kipton, Ohio, in 1891 was blamed on a stopped watch, American railroads adopted standards in 1893. A railroad watch had to be 18 or 16 size, open face, lever set, with at least 17 jewels, adjusted to five positions and accurate to about 30 seconds a week.
Elgin's B.W. Raymond and Father Time grades were built for this work. In 1960 Elgin's grade 730A became the first American wristwatch qualified for railroad service.
Solid gold, gold filled, silver or base metal?

Read the inside of the case
Many Elgins sit in gold filled cases: a thin layer of gold bonded to base metal. They look like gold, but worn edges show brass.
Solid gold, coin or sterling silver, and plain base metal cases also exist. The marks inside the back tell you which.
| Mark inside the case | What it means |
|---|---|
| Gold Filled, G.F., 10K or 14K Gold Filled, Rolled Gold Plate | Gold layer over base metal; value is mainly the watch |
| Warranted 20 Years, Guaranteed 25 Years | Gold filled, and usually made before 1924, when case makers dropped year guarantees |
| 14K or 18K alone, or British 9 .375, 14 .585, 18 .750 hallmarks | Likely solid gold: test before you rely on it |
| Sterling, Coin, or British silver hallmarks | Solid silver |
| Silveroid, Silverode, Oresilver, Silverine, Nickel | Nickel alloy, no precious metal |

For the checks we use on any gold case, see how to tell if a vintage watch is solid gold. British hallmarks on Elgin cases are decoded in pocket watch hallmarks, and case styles in full hunter, half hunter and open face.

This is the metal only. A working Elgin in a solid gold case is usually worth more than its gold, so ask for a valuation before you sell it by weight.
Fakes, "Elgin" cases and married watches
The Elgin name causes confusion in four ways:
The Illinois Watch Case Co. of Elgin, Illinois sold cases branded Elgin Giant, Elgin Commander and Elgin USA. They held movements from any maker. Check the movement, not the case.
Cheap Swiss watches copied American names, such as "Elfin" for Elgin. Clues: trains on the dial, a tiny "Swiss", "21 Jewels" in an arc on the dial, two dial feet instead of three.
The name was later used on battery watches. The original company never made quartz watches.
Movements and cases were usually made by different firms, so a non-Elgin case is normal. Look for a good fit: no loose spacer ring, matching size, no extra screw holes.

- Solid gold case: hundreds to over a thousand pounds, led by decoration and condition.
- Rare high grade: a Veritas with a winding indicator made US$9,375 in a gold filled case.

Does it come on a chain?
Many Elgins arrive on an Albert chain. A gold chain can be worth more than a gold filled watch. See our gold Albert chain value guide and chain styles.

Questions we are asked
Are Elgin pocket watches worth anything?
Yes, though many are worth modest sums. An everyday grade in a gold plated or gold filled case sits at the low end; Bonhams sold one of about 1905 for US$140.80 in May 2026. Solid gold cases and rare grades are worth far more.
Are Elgin pocket watches solid gold?
Many are not. A great many have gold filled cases, marked Gold Filled, 10K or 14K Gold Filled, or with a year guarantee. A case marked 14K or 18K alone, or with British gold hallmarks, is likely solid but should be tested.
Where is the serial number on an Elgin pocket watch?
On the movement plate, seen when you open the back. The number inside the case lid belongs to the case and does not date the watch.
How old is my Elgin pocket watch?
Compare the movement serial with the published lists: 1,000,000 was reached in 1882, 9,000,000 in 1900, 23,000,000 in 1920 and 48,000,000 in 1950. Treat the year as approximate.
Which Elgin grades are most collected?
Named high grades: Veritas, Father Time, B.W. Raymond, Lord Elgin and C.H. Hulburd, especially with 21 or 23 jewels, winding indicators or special dials.
What does "Warranted 20 Years" mean on my Elgin case?
It is a gold filled case guaranteed against wearing through for 20 years. American case makers stopped stamping year guarantees from 1 January 1924, so it points to an earlier case.
My case says Elgin but the movement says something else. Is it fake?
Not necessarily. The Illinois Watch Case Co. used names such as Elgin Giant on its cases, which held movements from many makers. The movement decides what the watch is.
