The piece opens horizontally at the centre on a hinge, with the upper section lifting to reveal a fitted interior. Inside, the lower half is enamelled and decorated with delicate gold leaf motifs, centred with a bezel-set diamond, while the inside of the lid is lined in blue fabric and printed with an imperial-style eagle device. The opening mechanism is neatly integrated into the gold banding, giving the egg a clean exterior when closed.
