An Edwardian silver-gilt Corinthian column candlestick by Hawksworth, Eyre & Co Ltd, the celebrated Sheffield silversmiths, dating to approximately 1905. Founded in Sheffield in 1833 by Charles Hawksworth and John Eyre, the firm exhibited at the 1851 Great Exhibition and grew into an internationally known maker with branches in London, New York, Montreal and Buenos Aires.
The candlestick is modelled as a classical Corinthian column: a fluted shaft rising to a finely detailed acanthus-leaf capital with a removable nozzle. It stands on a square stepped base with a gadrooned border and foliate engraving, the whole finished in warm gold gilding that emphasises the architectural detail.
