What Are Your Krugerrands Worth Today?

Tell us how many you have and we'll give you a live, no-obligation valuation against today's gold price. Our specialists reply within one working day.

Introduced in 1967, the Krugerrand was the first modern bullion coin and remains the most widely traded gold coin in the world. That fame is exactly why it's so easy to sell: a Krugerrand's value is its gold, the gold market is global and transparent, and a fair buyer can quote you in minutes. If you've inherited or invested in Krugerrands, here's how to get a proper price.

What a Krugerrand actually is

A full ounce of gold

The standard 1oz Krugerrand contains exactly one troy ounce of pure gold. It's struck in 22 carat (a copper alloy for durability), so it weighs a little more than an ounce overall — but the gold content is a full ounce.

Fractional sizes too

Krugerrands also come as 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz coins. Each is valued on its precise gold content, so smaller coins are worth proportionally less.

Value tracks the gold price

A Krugerrand is a bullion coin, so its worth follows the live gold spot price almost exactly, plus a small premium. Condition matters far less than with collectable coins.

"A Krugerrand is, in effect, an ounce of gold in your hand. Its value is the market price of that gold — clear, liquid and easy to realise."

How We Value Your Krugerrands

Our offer is transparent and tied to the market on the day:

  • Gold content — 1oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz or 1/10 oz, valued on precise fine-gold weight.
  • Live gold price — we quote against the current spot price when you sell.
  • Quantity — single coins or full tubes and collections welcome.
  • Authenticity — we verify each coin; counterfeits exist, so expert checking protects you.
  • Condition — for bullion this rarely changes value, unlike rare numismatic coins.

Krugerrands and tax: an important difference

Here's something many sellers don't realise. Unlike UK gold sovereigns and Britannias — which are UK legal tender and therefore free of Capital Gains Tax — the Krugerrand is a South African coin and not UK legal tender. That means any gain on selling Krugerrands can be subject to Capital Gains Tax, though only on the profit and only above your annual exempt amount (£3,000 for 2026). Our full guide to tax on selling gold explains how this works.

Note: This is general information, not tax advice. Your position depends on your circumstances — check with HMRC or an accountant, especially for larger holdings.

Krugerrands are easy to sell and instantly liquid — though, unlike UK sovereigns, they're not exempt from CGT.

If tax efficiency matters to you, it's worth comparing with CGT-free British coins — see our sell gold sovereign coins page. Whatever you hold, we buy it directly: start with sell your gold or browse our bullion range.

Frequently Asked Questions

Selling Krugerrands in the UK — common questions.

How much is a Krugerrand worth?

A 1oz Krugerrand contains a full troy ounce of pure gold, so its value closely tracks the live gold price, plus a small premium. Fractional coins (1/2, 1/4, 1/10 oz) are worth proportionally less. Request a free valuation for today's figure.

Do I pay tax when I sell Krugerrands in the UK?

Possibly. Krugerrands are not UK legal tender, so any gain may be subject to Capital Gains Tax — but only on the profit and only above the annual exempt amount (£3,000 for 2026). UK sovereigns and Britannias are CGT-exempt by contrast. Check with HMRC or an accountant.

Can I sell a single Krugerrand?

Yes. We buy single coins as readily as full tubes and collections, at the same transparent live-market rate.

Does the condition of my Krugerrand matter?

For standard bullion Krugerrands, condition has little effect — the value is the gold. Rare proof or special-issue Krugerrands can carry a numismatic premium, which we'll identify if present.

How do I know my Krugerrand is genuine?

Counterfeits do exist, so we verify weight, dimensions and metal on every coin. This protects you as the seller and ensures a clean, confident transaction.
