Pietra Dura

Pietra dura is a mosaic of cut hardstones fitted so finely the joins vanish — pictures in stone, set into jewellery.

What is a pietra dura?

Pietra dura ('hard stone') inlays precisely cut pieces of coloured hardstone — lapis, malachite, marble — into a stone ground to form flowers, birds and scenes, with seamless joints.

History & why it matters

A Florentine speciality, it was popular with Victorian Grand Tour travellers, set into brooches and pendants. Distinct from the glass-tessera micro-mosaic technique.
