En tremblant" is a French expression that translates to "to tremble." Initially coined to characterize jewellery from the 18th and 19th centuries, it refers to pieces where sections of diamonds were affixed to a trembler—a spring-like material such as a thin metal wire. This construction imparted movement to the jewel when worn. Brooches fashioned in this manner were especially adept at capturing and reflecting the dazzling play of light from candle flames.
