Serpent History

There is an extensive and intriguing history behind serpent rings, with specimens being discovered in a wide variety of civilizations throughout time and space. Because of its long-held symbolic meanings of knowledge, rebirth, and metamorphosis, the snake is often depicted in works of art and worn as jewellery.

A snake was associated with health and healing in ancient Greece, where the deity of medicine, Asclepius, was often shown beside a serpent. Intricate serpent rings, sometimes set with precious stones, were also often worn by Romans.

The Victorian period saw a rise in the popularity of serpent jewellery, with the snake coming to represent undying love and loyalty. Several of the snake rings and brooches popular during the reign of Queen Victoria were set with precious stones and had elaborate designs. Several jewellery items from the Art Nouveau period (late 19th/early 20th century) include serpents or other sinuous, naturalistic shapes.

At the turn of the century, the snake ring took on a variety of different forms and interpretations.
Art Deco snake rings were all the rage in the '20s because of their minimalistic, geometric styles. In addition, many famous people in the 1960s and 1970s wore jewellery shaped like snakes as a sign of their countercultural and rebellious attitudes.

The delicate workmanship and design of antique snake rings have ensured their continued popularity among collectors and jewellery aficionados in the modern day. These rings are a tribute to the timeless allure of the snake emblem and the skill of the artisans who fashioned them, whether they are ornate with diamonds and precious metals or have sleek, minimalist designs.
