A Victorian amethyst fringe necklace in 9KT gold, circa 1880, set throughout with 54 natural amethysts totalling approximately 130 carats.
Graduated oval amethysts run round the neck in collet settings, and from the front hangs a fringe of pear cut drops, each suspended so it swings independently. The largest stones are around 5 ct. The colour is the open reddish purple of Victorian amethyst rather than the darker tone of modern heat treated material, and the stones are all cut by hand.
Fringe necklaces of this scale were evening jewellery, made to be seen under candle and gaslight, and the movement in the drops is the whole point of the design.
