Kutchinsky 18KT Gold Openwork Bombé Ring, London 1970s

£5,950.00

A Kutchinsky 18KT gold ring of sculptural bombé form, the domed head pierced with irregular circular apertures and worked all over with a textured finish. Signed Kutchinsky in script to the interior, made in the 1970s.

The dome is built solid and then cut through, so the piercings read as openings in a worked surface rather than as a lattice, and the raised collars around each aperture catch light against the matt ground. It weighs 14.5 grams.

Kutchinsky was founded in London in 1893 by Hirsch Kutchinsky, whose family had been jewellers in Poland before fleeing persecution. His grandson Joseph led the firm through most of the twentieth century, and it is credited with introducing hand textured gold to British jewellery. Through the 1960s and 1970s the house worked in bark finishes, twisted wires and carved textures alongside Grima and Chaumet, and traded until the early 1990s.
