Georgian rose cut diamond of approximately 4.40 carats, closed back in a silver collet and carried on a later Victorian 15KT gold shank with a pierced and scrolled gallery.
The stone is the whole point of the ring. It is a large rose cut, flat beneath and rising to a crown of triangular facets that meet at a point, the cut used for diamonds before the brilliant took over, and at this size it is a stone that was worked for spread rather than for weight. It sits closed back in a silver collet, the Georgian practice, with the metal behind the stone rather than open to the light. The mount that carries it was made later: a Victorian 15KT gold head pierced and scrolled right round, with small diamonds set into the openwork of the shoulders and a plain tapering band. Fifteen carat gold was only legal in Britain between 1854 and 1932, which places the shank inside that window.
