Retro Diamond Scroll Brooch, 14KT White Gold, Old Mine Cut Centre
A generous Retro scroll brooch in 14KT white gold, 4.5cm across, built from interlaced C-scrolls and curls that alternate polished ribbons with densely grain-set diamond ribbons.
At its centre sits a cushion-shaped old mine cut diamond of around a carat, a hand-cut stone with a small table and a high crown, the kind cut before the modern round brilliant existed. Four further old cuts are scattered across the scrollwork with a deliberate asymmetry, and over a hundred smaller stones fill the ribbons.
The freely scrolling, asymmetric ribbon design is the signature of the Retro period, when jewellers abandoned the rigid geometry of the 1920s and 30s for sweeping, sculptural forms.
