Carlo Giuliano 22KT Gold Brooch, Greek Silver Tetradrachm of Lysimachos
Carlo Giuliano 22KT gold brooch mounting an ancient Greek silver tetradrachm of Lysimachos, King of Thrace, the coin held in a reeded gold collar on knife wire supports. In its original fitted case.
The coin is a tetradrachm struck for Lysimachos, one of Alexander's own bodyguards, who took Thrace after Alexander's death and ruled it from 305 to 281 BC. The obverse carries the head of the deified Alexander wearing the horn of Ammon, the mark of his claimed descent from the god at Siwa. The reverse shows Athena seated holding Nike, with the legend of King Lysimachos around her. Putting Alexander's face on his own coinage was how Lysimachos argued his right to the throne.
Carlo Giuliano came to London from Naples in the 1860s and worked for Castellani and Robert Phillips before opening at 115 Piccadilly. He is the finest of the archaeological revival jewellers working in England, and mounts like this one, which hold an ancient object without altering it, are characteristic of him.
The mount is struck with the C.G. maker's mark. Supplied in its original tooled leather fitted case.
