Unmounted Victorian Era Italian Grand Tour Micro Mosaic plaque, featuring a Vatican City, St. Peter's Square.
Early 19th Century.
The micro mosaic is mounted into black marble plaque.

Condition: The plaque is pre-owned, and has minor signs of usage, good and pleasant condition, all micro mosaic parts are in tact

The origins of micro mosaics date back to Roman times.
The technique is quite complicated. Micro mosaics were made of heated glass that was pulled into small strands and cut into tiny pieces called tesserae.
Metal oxides were then added to the glass to achieve colour. The tesserae were then placed and glued to form an image.
