A Georgian 18ct gold engine-turned snuff box by Alexander James Strachan, hallmarked in London in 1810, during the reign of George III.
The rectangular box is decorated throughout with fine linear engine turning and has a hinged lid and polished gilded interior. The marks comprise the maker's mark AJS, the leopard's-head town mark for London, the sovereign's-head duty mark, the date letter and the crowned 18 for 18-carat gold.
Alexander James Strachan (1774–1850) was among the foremost London gold-box makers of the period, principal supplier of gold boxes to the Royal Goldsmiths Rundell, Bridge & Rundell, and recorded in 1824 as a ‘Jeweller and Engine Turner’ — a perfect match for this engine-turned box.
An elegant and highly collectable Georgian gold box by a celebrated maker.
