Antique Hamilton & Inches Edinburgh Brooch and Earring Box

£195.00

A rectangular antique jewellery presentation box by the renowned Edinburgh jeweller and silversmith Hamilton & Inches.

The dark brown leather exterior has softly rounded corners and a brass fastening. It opens to reveal a cream satin-lined lid printed:

Hamilton & Inches 90 Princes St Edinburgh

The base is fitted in deep purple velvet with a central horizontal opening and surrounding impressions consistent with the display of a brooch accompanied by earrings, dress clips or other matching jewellery.

Hamilton & Inches was founded by Robert Kirk Inches and his uncle James Hamilton in Edinburgh in 1866. The firm opened on Princes Street and developed into one of Scotland’s leading jewellers, silversmiths and watch specialists.

Because the box carries the 90 Princes Street address, it predates the firm’s move to George Street in 1952. It is therefore earlier than the suggested 1970s–1980s date and is more consistent with the late Victorian or early 20th-century period.

Dimensions -
Exterior: 9.5 x 6.7 cm
Usable interior: Length: Approximately 8.4cm; Width: Approximately 6cm

Condition :
Fair antique condition with visible wear consistent with age. The brown leather exterior displays rubbing, scratches and small surface marks. The cream satin lining has discolouration and minor creasing. The purple velvet base shows impressions, wear and areas where previous fittings have compressed or disturbed the fabric. The Hamilton & Inches retailer’s stamp remains clearly legible.
